Nice work guys, I’m loving the new funky sound of April Uprising, however please don’t stop playing all the classics of the early years, I hope to hear them when you come to London!
This is a great tute, I headed straight down to my local music shop to get a new slide as soon as i saw it. Very nicely presented, practical and is a very good way for guitar players to have an insight into John’s music.
Thank you John Butler for being such an amazing roll model. Your music has the best vibe. I’m a long standing fan and I can’t wait for April Rising. I’ve played guitar for 22 years but have never experimented with lap slide open tuning as I’ve never had anyone to teach me the basics…so to stumble across your blog has been an awesome find….thanks for sharing….I’m playing it now….doesn’t sound quite the same as you John (he he) but still, very sweet on my mini maton! ) What fun I will be having now! Thank you xxx

its just not like the original stuff… John u had something unique and it seems you have main streamed like the rest of society. it should never be about the money only the message in the music… wish you would play like you used to. im really sorry to see Micheal and shannon gone from what was the best TRIO EVER!!! I dont hear that soulful playing i used to hear, i can no longer hear or feel the relationship you seemed to have with your guitar. I am not a fan of evolotion, and wish we as humans would not try to change things that are already perfect!!
I have only heard the preview tracks that are posted on the site, but I totally agree. Sunrise Over Sea is golden! It felt like Grand National started moving away from the original JBT style. This new album seems like it completely ignores all the stylistic qualities that drew me towards the group.
Vicki. musicians need to grow (evolve) and experiment. sometimes it’s to heal… sometimes it’s just them growing as a musician. to stay the same would be boring. the new trio sounds great. it’s different, i admit that, and that is what draws me to JBT. it just takes some getting use to. musicians should not try and please the crowds. they need to please themselves first and if people like it, even better. as with any new line up it will take the trio some time to perfect the sound they are looking for and touring will help that. i’m a drummer and since getting into JBT last year i’ve also started taking guitar lessons and vocal training because John has inspired me to get out from behind the kit…i plan on being on the street busking within the year…my first song learned on guitar is peaches and cream…i’m learning it to play to my daughter.
hey man. freaking sweet! i totally connect with you not knowing chords…i use alternate tunings and capos. so on the rare occasion i have sit down and teach someone what i’m doing…i sound exactly like you here..hehe.
i’m doing this progression here…but i have no idea what i do here..it just kinda happens…yeah i get it! =)
allways good stuff! i’m in anticipation for the concert in berlin on the 20.th of april. yeah! please take mama kin with you. my admiration for you both. good luck for your children…
Thanks, John. Just curious; are those fake nails? I’m torn between pickin with finger / thumb picks, or going with fingers / nails (which I like better but hard to get the same volume….).
great tutorial, even without chord names!
seriously fascinating to see how intuitive the music is for you, though.
I have a request.
